The Chinese HSBC Manufacturing PMI is a composite indicator designed to provide an overall view of activity in the manufacturing sector and acts as an leading indicator for the whole economy. The HSBC Markit purchasing manager’s index (PMI) rose to 47.1 in May from 46.7 in the preceding month (a score below 50 indicates contraction in manufacturing activity). The survey indicated that output, new orders and employment remained weak.

Service activity slows in August, PMI declines to 52.4 on weak jobs creation. The fall in services growth, alongside manufacturing growth at a 15-month low, pushed a composite index down to 52.6 in August from 53.9.
